Lion and Unicorn

Carlisle Parade was embellished by a lion and unicorn from Buckingham Palace, given by Patrick Robertson MP.
Ninety Hastings Coastguards were sent to Portsmouth as part of the new crews of warships in the Baltic Fleet.
The Bread Fund Committee distributed 200 gallons of bread at the Town Hall to the poor.
The first service was held at the new Fishermen’s Church [now the Fishermen's Museum], at Rock-a-Nore.

Death of Musgrave Brisco, aged 63, the MP who had resigned his seat on April 25 due to ill-health. On 10 May 1854 Frederick North was elected as MP and Baron for the Cinque Port of Hastings to replace Brisco.
Town Centre Road

South Eastern Railway gives a piece of land near York Buildings to enable the road to be widened.
The Council approved the report of John Braithwaite CE on the drainage scheme, costing £16,627.
Hastings Council decided to name the houses in the Longfields as ‘St Marys Terrace’.
The Hastings Post Office in George Street was relocated in Wellington Place, part of the move of the heart of Hastings from the Old Town to the Priory Valley.
Water Crisis

The town’s reservoirs were reported empty; water was taken from the Eversfield works.
Roads Renamed

York Place in the town centre was renamed Wellington Place. Chalk Road was renamed as part of Pelham Street [it formed what is now the section of Albert Road from the seafront to Wellington Square].
York Tavern Renamed

York Tavern was re-named Freemasons Tavern.
The boat races in the Hastings Annual Regatta were held.
An effigy of Emperor Nicholas was paraded and burnt on a bonfire in front of the Albion Hotel, Marine Parade. An effigy of Queen Victoria was in the procession. The fire started at 8.00pm.
Dinner at the Swan Hotel for Captain McClure RN, who explored the Arctic seas and North West Passage. The mayor and other dignitaries were present.
Death of Old Humphrey age 67, who gave his name to Old Humphrey Avenue in the Old Town.
The National School for Boys opened in Tackleway.
