The RNLI expressed a wish that a branch should be formed in Hastings, independent of the Royal Humane Society. This was agreed.
The new lifeboat was launched. It cost £300, had a crew of 13 and was called Victoria.
The first RNLI lifeboat arrived in Hastings on Easter Monday, the 5th. This followed the tragic loss of a collier on the rocks at Rock-a-Nore on 7 October 1857, when four men drowned. As a result, a local branch of ...

The Eversfield Waterworks Company was formed to increase the water supply to the town.
Castle Finds

In an excavation for coins on the West Hill near the Castle under the superintendence of Frederick North MP, some coins and old bones were found.
A new fire engine arrived. It was drawn by two horses, and was called Prince Albert.
Gas Injury
From the Hastings News of 07/05/1858
There was an explosion of gas at the house of Mr Ticehurst, the surgeon. A child employed in the house was burnt.
A new assembly room [later called the Public Hall] and arcade between Robertson Street and Priory Street were proposed, and a new company was formed.
Prince Albert passed through Hastings en route to Prussia. He was met by a crowd at Hastings Station.
The King of the Belgians visited the [Royal] Victoria Hotel in St Leonards to see the ex-Queen of the French.
There was a report of a proposed new railway line direct from Tonbridge to London.
The new Holy Trinity Church in Robertson Street opened on the apt St Michaels Day, 29 September. The ground had been purchased in early 1857 and footings were excavated by April that year. The chancel was not completed until the ...

Ore Chapel

The foundations of the new Chapel of Ease at Ore were started. Its foundation stone was laid on November 23 by the Countess of Waldegrave.
A Mr Jeremiah Skinner takes a 99-year lease on a large plot of land in Western Road, where he builds stables and coach houses. By the end of the century this is a motor business too, with buses and taxis. ...
