New Theatre?

There was talk of building a new theatre for Hastings, on the site of the Castle Mews, Queens Road. [To be the Gaiety.]
At the Council meeting on 2 March, plans for 89 houses on the Mount Pleasant Estate were passed. On 4 June, 71 lots of freehold building land on the estate were sold for about £4,000.
A memorial stone for the new Congregational School building in Priory Street was laid on 20 March.
Suicide

On Easter Monday, 2 April, Mr Charles Breeds, a member of the well-known and long-established Hastings firm, committed suicide.
A windmill at Ore was offered for sale by auction but appears to have failed to find a buyer. An advert in the News of 11 May said the sale would take place on 26 May. The mill was unnamed ...

St Helens Church opened on Sunday 17 June. The lessons were read by Mr CH Frewen, the builder of the church.
The well-known former mayor of Hastings Frederick Ticehurst died on 20 July.
Launch of the Hastings Times by wealthy Liberal businessman Halley Stewart.
The foundation stone of the Silverdale Mission Hall was laid on 31 October by Thomas Brassey. His wife had died on 3 January 1877.

Heavy Gale

A very heavy gale on 11 November caused much damage in the Old Town. A house in Woods Passage had its roof blown off.
