Fire destroyed the Roman Catholic church of St Thomas of Canterbury in Magdalen Road on 3 January. There was also a fire at a tailors and outfitters in High Street on 6 January.

Queen Victoria's Jubilee Day - the 50th anniversary of her coming to the throne - was celebrated around the town. The new pleasure steamer May started making daily trips from the pier on that day.

The death of Miss Maria Jane Sayer, aged 79, of Parade House, was announced.

Station Opens 01/10/1887

The new West St Leonards Station was officially opened. It is on the Hastings-Tunbridge Wells line, by the Bopeep tunnel.

New Hospital Opens 13/10/1887

The new East Sussex Hospital at White Rock was officially opened by local MP Wilson Noble, after many years uncertainty over its location. It replaced the Infirmary, which had opened there on 24 June 1841, on land bought from the ... (more...)

Death of Lady Brassey From the Hastings News of 14/10/1887

Lady Brassey, aged 48, had died on board the large family yacht the Sunbeam, between Australia and Mauritius, on 14 September. She was buried at sea.

Silverhill Fire From the Hastings News of 11/11/1887

There was a big fire at the Eldridge and Cruttenden's shop at Silverhill, causing damage estimated at £1,300.
