The News Supports Trams
From the Hastings News of 15/01/1897
An editorial piece expressed support for the tramcar system against omnibuses, which blocked nearly half the roadway, impeded carriage traffic and were noisy and uncomfortable for passengers. They were also destructive to public roads and a noisy nuisance to Front Line occupants, whereas tramcars were noiseless, convenient and comfortable. Another editorial, on 22 January, headed The Tramway Agitation, supported an easy gliding, artistic-looking tramcar propelled without noise, a decided improvement on heavy, lumbering, road-destroying and road-impeding omnibuses. A tramway meeting on 16 January passed a resolution in favour of the trams.
